Mount Cameroon National Park (MCNP) is a Biodiversity hotspot with so much endemism. It is also a rich touristic site of great potentials, host to the highest point in Central and West Africa known locally as Mt. Fako. The athletic Federation usually organizes an annual international sporting event called the Mt. Cameroon race of hope which attracts huge crowd both nationally and internationally with about 70% of the Mount Cameroon race track within the National Park. Thus, the Park receives great numbers of visitors yearly during the mountain race competition whose passage always leaves behind huge quantities of non-biodegradable wastes ranging from plastic bottles, thorn dresses and shoes etc without any way forward from the organizer of the race. These wastes are not environmentally friendly and make the view uncomfortable to visitors. The Park service is therefore prompted to organize clean up campaigns to preserve the natural beauty of the Park whereby they mobilize local tour operators and volunteers with the financial support of the Program for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources South West Region (PSMNR-SWR). During the 2026 clean-up campaign organized on the 13th and 14th of March 2026 and two weeks after the race of hope, about 25 persons were mobilized, sub groups were formed and assigned to different segments along the race track right from the Summit at about 4090m asl to old Bicec in Buea where they collect all non-biodegradable wastes into 100kg bags and brought down to town for proper disposal by the waste management company. At the end of this exercise, fifteen 200kg bags were filled with plastic wastes collected from the National Park in order to restore its’ esthetic beauty. On the side lines of this important activity, a radio announcement and sensitization messages are broadcast over Radio Bonakanda to raise the awareness of users on waste management within the Park which is a Protected area.
After this clean up campaigns, the Park is free from unwanted waste, biodiversity is free from the dangers of consuming toxic waste while community members participating in the campaign goes back with a financial compensation which enhances their livelihood and the site is left appealing to sight.
